If you love your pets as if they were a part of your family, then you should know that taking care of them is like taking care of your own children. Pets are loyal and they are fun to have around the house. But when something happens to them, you should be prepared to do what you can to help save them. Pets can get into all sorts of accidents because they are not mentally-equipped to know about certain things. Here are some things that you can do in case your pet meets a medical emergency. • Apply First Aid – It may sound laughable but there is such a thing as animal first-aid. This is not a common thing to learn but if you have a pet in your house, you might want to discuss with your vet the different ways to manage an emergency. You can learn many things such as what to do if you suspect your pet has eaten something poisonous; where to begin after learning your dog has been injured after having been in a fight with another dog; and where to go in the case that you cannot do anything for your pet in an emergency. First aid is just as important to learn on pets as it is on humans. It is also very different so make sure that you consult with your vet about the different procedures that you can practice on the different animals that you have in your home. • Feed your pet – When your pet is injured in any way, it might make it almost impossible for it to go to its bowl to eat or to drink water. This is the time that you need to play the role of a nurse and take care of your pet by feeding it. You can feed your pet by bringing the food to the place where it is resting. In the case of water, the simple use of a syringe will help to give your pet the water that it needs so it does not get dehydrated. Make sure that your pet gets enough to eat but do not force it to eat if it does not want to. • Comfort your pet – Your pet feels pain just like you do and if it is injured, it needs all the love and care that you would give if one of your family members were injured. Make sure that you pay attention to your pet and also comfort it by showing that you care. In the case of dogs and cats, this is easily done just by cuddling with them. Smaller animals like hamsters and any reptiles that you might own in glass aquariums just need attention. They just need to know that you are around and that you are trying your best to help. • Call the vet – Naturally, the first thing that you should do in a pet medical emergency is to call your vet. However, this is not something that most people will remember or even consider. Most pet owners think that they know their pet best and will not do much to help them, thinking that the pet will heal itself over time. This is not the case especially if you have small fragile pets like toy dogs or small cats. Always keep in mind that you can call the vet immediately after something happens to your pet. |
