Not everyone has the same taste in pets. In fact, people have all sorts of different pets besides the usual cat and dog. Some people have fish, others even keep lizards. However, the one pet that is slowly gaining popularity again is the bird. The appeal is that there are so many types of birds that one can choose from. In fact, there are thousands of birds that people can keep as pets, although some of them might even be illegal to purchase. If you are a bird keeper or wish to start taking care of your own cockatoo or parrot, then the first thing that you should know is that taking care of them is a lot different than, say, if you had a pet snake or a gerbil. Here are some ways that you can learn to take care of a pet bird that you may be planning to get. • A cage – The first thing to do is to make sure that you have a right-sized cage for the bird that you want to take care of. Of course, this means that you should study a little about how big certain species of birds grow. The bigger the cage, the better for the bird but you might want to reconsider getting too big of a cage if your living space can't handle it. Now, if you have a cage, the next thing to think of is where to position it in a house. In the case of most birds, you will need to put the cage where there is a lot of sunlight. • Toys – Like most other pets, you can buy toys for birds too. Some birds like parrots are actually very playful and you can get different bells and wheels that they can play with. A nearby pet store should carry all your toy needs. • Food and Vitamins – Again, you will need to take care of your bird in all ways possible and that also means that you should buy the right food and medicine for it so that it is healthy at all times. Bird seed, clean water and bird vitamins are all you need to keep your bird healthy. It's as simple as giving your bird a healthy helping each day so that it is satisfied and happy always. • Talk to your pet – Now, this may seem awkward but pets do like being acknowledged as well. Birds, in particular, like to be talked to. They crave the attention. The parrot alone is a bird that loves being talked to on a frequent basis and sooner or later it will actually mimic some of the words that you say. Pay attention and talk to your bird as often as you can on a daily basis. • Clean everyday – Since the bird will be in a cage all day, most of its waste will be expelled there too. It is therefore important that you clean your bird's cage once every day. This includes cleaning the floor, the bowl where its food is kept, a change of water and even the cleansing of their toys. You can make sure items are really clean by sterilizing them in warm water. |
